mishie's stereo is playing: howie day - "stop all the world now"

my friend glenn, who is the biggest beatles (and john lennon) fan i know, wrote such a beautiful essay on his blog today about the impact of john lennon's music on his life. i love every single word, so i thought i would re-reproduce it for you all here.

Growing up with John Lennon
By Glenn Tuazon

I missed the peak of flower power and the rise of Sergeant Pepper by a good 21 years. Suffice it to say that I also missed Watergate and the Vietnam War and their concomitant protest movements. My parents met each other two years after Mark David Chapman heartlessly shot this bespectacled Beatle, fresh from Starting Over. Yet, I still consider myself to have grown up with John Winston Lennon, whom I unabashedly (and shamelessly) consider the big brother I never had.

I was just six years old when I first fell in love with the Beatles. My dad brought home a cassette copy of the band’s Past Masters Volume 2 album and popped it in our car’s tape deck. It didn’t take 10 seconds before Day Tripper’s bass line captured my full attention. With that, my thirteen year affinity for the Fab Four began and hasn’t let up.

mishie's stereo is playing: interpol - "antics"

although i admit to being slightly annoyed that teen soaps like the o.c. and one tree hill have pretty much become advertisements for a certain brand of marketable rock and pop music for the masses, i still just simply love hearing my favourite bands on these shows. sure, i'm supposed to hate it for all its blatant commercialism and it does surely suck when your new favourite song is used as a backdrop for the cheesiest scene in the history of television, but instead i've just learned to embrace it for the most part. i think it's especially cool that these t.v. shows have gotten the rights to preview and play certain singles from bands whose albums haven't even come out yet (case in point, coldplay's "fix you" got its premiere on an episode of the o.c. last year which caused quite a ruckus among fans).

the point is, another new revolution is starting - podcasts being spawned from t.v. shows. in a recent episode of one tree hill (episode 3 of season 3), the character of peyton sawyer is seen in the middle of recording a podcast...now that actual podcast from the fictional character can be downloaded either at the itunes music store or from this (badly designed) official podcast site. it's supposed to be a weekly thing now with a new podcast up after each new episode has aired. i think it's totally awesome for the creators of the show to find such a cool way to interact with their audience. during the first season, peyton even had a music blog that fans of the show could visit. peyton's character can annoy me from time to time, but we both have superb taste in music so i rather enjoy hearing her ramblings about her life and music. check it out.

i predict many other shows will follow suit.

have a happy halloween everyone!

mishie's stereo is playing: elizabethtown motion picture soundtrack

are there any album releases this winter that you are looking forward to? it seems to me the cd release calendar for the rest of 2005 is pretty dead and we'll be slapped by a slew of major label greatest hits-type cash grabs very soon. it's time for me to re-evaluate all the albums i listened to in 2005 and compile a year-end list, and give my poor wallet a break.

  • white stripes cover tegan and sara's "walking with a ghost". pretty cool and just in time for halloween. download here [you sendit link].
  • james lafferty in a batman costume. i love james. i love batman. my wildest dreams have come true!
  • a couple days ago, i played some christmas music. unbelievable, right? i'm ready for christmas, it's my favourite time of the year.
  • i had a weird craving for food at the ikea restaurant this afternoon.
  • new uma thurman + bryan greenberg movie prime opens today. looks good. i want to see it. YAY jake!

have a great weekend filled with fun, laughter and good music, my darlings!

mishie's stereo is playing: depeche mode - "playing the angel"

THE DARKEST STAR

believe it or not, my world has turned upside down since i last wrote. don't worry, it's all in a good way and at this moment, i feel really good about myself. i finally made peace with the mistakes i've made in the past and i've let go of all the anger and resentment i held for so long towards my parents. we're all starting over, all of us, and rebuilding our relationship from the bottom up. it's going to be quite a journey, but i see really good things ahead.

a couple weekends ago, i attended my convocation ceremony at york university. i finally was able to hold my fancy piece of paper worth roughly $20,000 canadian. and although the bulk of the ceremony put me to sleep (too bloody long), it was completely surreal to walk across the stage and receive my credentials. we took many, many photos so i just selected a few for my flickr page which you can peruse if you wish.

of course, my cousin mimi came to visit as well and we had an awesome time together. she's my best friend in the whole wide world and we did all the silly things i've been wanting to do for a long time. she dyed my hair brown with copper highlights and i must say i look really good. yay!

i've been really busy hanging out with my dear cousin who came to visit from british columbia., i promise to catch you up on everything in a week or two. until then i must tell you that i am really loving the latest fall out boy album. i better not throw out my box of jimmy eat world 45's yet. i am so emo i scare myself sometimes. fall out boy are performing on one tree hill next week. yay!

mishie's stereo is playing: arctic monkeys - "i bet that you look good on the dance floor"

I LOVE THE ARCTIC MONKEYS!

the biggest things out of the u.k. is currently arctic monkeys, a rock and roll group with major punk influences and enough sexy swagger to win you over. the boys (all under the age of 21) hail from sheffield, england and are signed to domino records (home to franz ferdinand) . not surprisingly, NME is drooling all over them despite the fact that they've only really officially released one single but they've sold out many, many shows.

their music features very sharp and witty lyrics, making them stand out from their peers. next monday, the new single i bet that you look good on the dance floor will be in stores in the u.k. you may download the video for this wicked song here.

scenestars offers many, many tracks from arctic monkeys for your listening pleasure right here.

if you're in love, grab tickets to their november 14th gig @ lee's palace before they are all gone!

mishie's stereo is playing: starsailor - "on the outside"

FAITH. HOPE. LOVE.

i really don't know when i'll stop gushing over these (super sappy) british rock bands, but i certainly don't see it happening any time soon, so for now i'll just tell you that starsailor's newest album on the outside comes out in the u.k. next week. good luck searching far and wide for an import! i used to be so obsessed with this band circa 2001 when they were established as the new coldplay, although chris martin's voice is so different from james walsh's. when i was a senior in high school, i remember telling everyone that i wanted to have james' baby - and then he went and broke my heart and had a baby with someone else. oh well, what's a girl to do? i moved on.

anyway, i loved their previous two albums love is here and silence is easy, and this new one is totally worth hearing as well. finally, starsailor prove they can rock out (while still staying sweet and melodic, of course). the new single "in the crossfire" is out now.

mishie's stereo is playing: antony and the johnsons - "i am a bird now"

today i've been listening to a lot of antony and the johnsons. it's exquisite music.

i can't believe there are new ipods again...this time with video capabilities. and a new version of itunes as well (and you can buy episodes of lost and desperate housewives?!). who wants to buy my 4th generation 40 gig off of me? i'll give you a sweet deal.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

explosions in the sky is my favourite post-rock band and i am more than thrilled they have re-released their debut (demo) album how strange innocence. the album was recorded in two (!) days in january 2002 in austin, texas. the band had 300 cd-r's to sell on the road, and there was also a limited edition tour vinyl version. now you can get the re-mastered cd with new artwork. this is too good not to be shared so be sure to pick up a copy because it's in stores today!

i was finally able to watch the premiere of season three of one tree hill on sunday. it is showing on CH! (times vary every week though, it's pretty retarded). to the best of my knowledge, it's on every sunday at noon for the rest of the month. then switching to 2:30 p.m. temporarily in november. i'm so looking forward to this season. i hope there is tons of nathan + haley goodness! i am so in love with them two. it looks like it could be very hot, even though chad and sophia have called it quits. he did always seem like a douche bag though.

the stellastarr* contest that i held last month is now over. thanks to everyone who entered...here are the winners:
first place:zhan huan zhou
second place:sam barbieri

happy birthday to me! i'm 22 today! i'd like to also wish a very happy birthday to my friend sean, a very kind soul who shares the special day with me.

hey - i'll be okay, my body aches from yesterday's fall but i'm moving on - brand new day!

mishie's stereo is playing: antony and the johnsons - "i am a bird now"

WARNING: be prepared for really self-indulgent crap below

it is the eve of my 22nd birthday and i feel like total shit - physically and emotionally. the day started out promising enough, i went shopping downtown hoping to spend some of my advance birthday cash since my family and i celebrated on sunday. i couldn't find anything that i liked that fit me properly. that really ticked me off because i saw a cute pair of pants i really wanted to own and i never really thought of my body proportions as odd in any way, although it seems all the best clothes are for skinny girls. grrr. i finally went to the huge HMV superstore to buy some cds to make myself feel better. it cheered me up a lot. on the way home i stopped by a CIBC bank machine to try to do some banking and the one important thing i wanted to do wouldn't go through. i hate the bank so much right now. when i finally got home, i slipped and fell down a flight of stairs and i really fucked up my right arm.

mishie's stereo is playing: idlewild - "warnings/promises"

it usually takes me approx. 45 minutes to get to work on a weekday, but when i work on saturdays, it takes me closer to 80 minutes. that is insane. today was especially bad because i missed ALL my connections. i missed the bus, the subway, and then the bus again. plus, it was freaking freezing so that pissed me off to no end. i'm one of those people that doesn't really operate well in cold weather. my only salvation was my beloved ipod which was playing me idlewild's latest album warnings/promises. i am pretty certain that this will make my top 10 of the year, it's bloody fantastic and it's a sacrilege this band isn't more popular here in north america. they've made four excellent albums over the years and really deserve more praise. i know most fans think 100 broken windows is their best album, but i am more partial to the remote part for all its understated beauty, and of course, warnings/promises definitely lives up to the band's promise. tour canada again, guys!

mishie's stereo is playing: the frames - "fitzcarraldo"

HOW CUTE IS THIS? PANDA SUSHI!

on my days off from work, i've been watching dawson's creek re-runs every morning while eating breakfast. it's really hard to believe that i used to be obsessed with this show at the beginning of high school. i was so into dawson & joey, but now katie holmes annoys the fuck out of me. of course now i watch degrassi: the next generation and one tree hill on dvd. heh. season three of one tree hill is supposed to premiere in canada this sunday on CH @ 3 p.m. but i'm really not counting on it. they always fuck with me regarding the airtimes of this show...we'll see what actually happens.

i'm listening to the frames. SO GOOD. buy all their albums now.

mishie's stereo is playing: gang of four - "return the gift"

I LOVE A MAN IN A UNIFORM

it's really time to give your franz ferdinand, bloc party and futureheads cds a break, because gang of four are back and armed with the original post-punk recipe, baby. unfortunately, return the gift doesn't include any new material, but instead features re-recorded versions of the band's best songs from their three previous studio albums. it's still exciting to see the original line-up reunited after so long and it serves as a delicious introduction to the band for those still without a clue.

the album comes out next tuesday october 11th (my birthday!) but for now you can go here and stream some songs.

i've also been listening to the new ladytron album witching hour and it's pretty good. i really love "destroy everything you touch" and "sugar" is pretty fun and infectious.

thoughts on the new depeche mode? playing the angel is in stores october 18th. i love the new single "precious", the whole album is pretty dark and somber. the band are embarking on a huge world tour soon with a stop in toronto december 1st. the raveonettes open!

i've also been on a real belle and sebastian kick lately. i love those scottish wunderkids! i really want this biography.

brooklyn vegan has some really good interpol pictures from the recent show in new york city. aww, daniel!

i caught the episode of lost last night. this show is too crazy. what is really going on with those numbers?!

mishie's stereo is playing: belle and sebastian - "the boy with the arab strap"

I REALLY COULD HAVE IT SO MUCH BETTER

i was really anticipating the release of the new franz ferdinand album you could have it so much better this week, but i'm afraid they have a real case of the sophomore slump. the new album is really lacking in upbeat dance in your underpants-type tracks that i absolutely adore. the album's first single "do you want to", which really isn't even that good, is the only thing that comes close to the greatness of their huge break-out hit "take me out". franz tries on too many ballads on this record, and it just doesn't fit their style. they really are at their best when they make catchy, up-tempo music.

the new broken social scene album is also disappointing. there's too much noise going on here, and i'm having a lot of trouble swimming through it all to find the nice melodies that were present in their last album you forgot it in people, which topped my list of favourite albums of the year in 2002.

there's a whole load of albums previously released in the u.k. that are finally getting a domestic release over here, i recommend them all because i already have them and they are super dee duper: james blunt (back to bedlam), the go! team (thunder, lightning, strike), the magic numbers (self titled).

you may also want to try the new albums from ladytron (witching hour) and fiona apple (extraordinary machine) for size.

mishie's stereo is playing: metric - "live it out"

WIN AN IPOD NANO !!!

cameron crowe's new movie elizabethtown is coming to theatres october 14th. that's fairly soon. mr. crowe directed one of my favourite movies of all-time almost famous and he's known to have pretty good taste in music which earns him brownie points in my book. the plot for elizabethtown really reminds me of garden state which is a plus for me since i loved that film but it's too bad that kirsten dunst is in this movie. i really can't stand her acting skills (or lack thereof)...and i really don't think much of orlando bloom either. despite all this, i have faith in cameron so i will try and make time to check this out anyway. what do you guys think? to celebrate the up-coming release of the film, my friends at cornerstone promotion and many other cool blogs besides my own are coming together to give away an ipod nano. it's a brand new 4 gig nano that is going to filled with pictures from the movie along with the soundtrack. to enter, just go this website. be sure to tell 'em your favourite blog is mine to increase your chances of winning. heh. good luck!

october is going to be a pretty busy month for me. there's a lot happening, including my 22nd birthay (october 11th), my convocation for university (october 15th). plus, my cousin mimi (who also happens to be my bestest friend in the whole wide world), who lives in victoria, b.c., is coming to visit me for two weeks after my convocation. yay!
