mishie's stereo is playing: idlewild - "warnings/promises"
here are some new music tracks for you all to check out. enjoy! and as always, let me know what you think. matador records is offering the first taste of the new spoon album gimme fiction. the track is called "i turn my camera on" and is available for download right here. new album is out may 10th, artwork done by my wicked friend sean mccabe. this is obviously a must-have. mark it down on your calendars, my children. for those of you who have seen the stunning adidas advertisement directed by spike jonze...there is an excellent music track featuring karen o of the yeah yeah yeahs on vocals that accompanies the visuals. now you can download an mp3 of it here. here is a fantastic remix worth hearing as well (thanks devon!) i really love this track, it's so beautifully haunting and i hope you agree. still looking for the new oasis song "lyla"? i'm still making it available for download for a limited time right here. i'm currently listening to idlewild's fantastic new album...you're a fool if you don't have this yet! now it's your turn to share. can someone send me the simple minds song "don't you forget about me". it's featured in the breakfast club, of course. i need it...NOW. - posted at 7:30PM | link | comments (2) |

mishie's stereo is playing: low millions - "ex-girlfriends"
wow, rob thomas' (matchbox 20 frontman) new solo single "lonely no more" has such slick production. it's so different from the stuff he does with his band. it's a great, fun pop song. i'm admiting to liking it although you won't see him throwing down cash for the album or anything, but is it bad that i want to dance to this? throw away my hipster cred now. in a similiar (disposable?) pop/rock vein, i'm surprised that adam cohen (yes, son of leonard) has formed a rock band called low millions. adam and i actually have history. well, not him and me personally, but his music and me. i absolutely love his self titled debut (it came out way in 1998) and i played it almost every day in high school. i just really connected to his lyrics and his singing was so passionate and not to mention, extremely sexy. some of you may remember his hit "cry ophelia" back in the day. it was even featured on dawson's creek! i was so bummed when he kinda dropped off the face of the earth (the album was hardly a commercial success). now he's fronting this rock band. weird. i actually came across low millions a month ago because i was surfing through a john mayer fansite and it mentioned that his guitarist michael chaves was doing work in this band low millions. a couple clicks to various websites later, i discover the frontman of low milions is none other than mr. adam cohen! i picked up a copy of their debut album ex-girlfriends just for the hell of it. adam's voice is still as great as ever, and i like the first single "eleanor" (it apparently has been garnering a lot of spins on radio?) but haven't had a chance to absorb the rest of the album. a lot of it seems really catchy although the whole album stands a risk of sounding generic and bland in my stereo after a couple spins. this is only because the rest of my music taste is more 'colourful' to say the least (i don't really want to say 'better'). i think they have a chance of finding some success. check out the video for "eleanor" on this page. it's really nothing special, but like i've said previously - lead singer adam cohen is really sexy. adam also has a french solo album that he quietly released last year. that must have been extra quiet because i only found out now. you can stream some songs on his official website. i think it's darn lovely. i'm more interested in tracking down a copy of this to tell you the truth, maybe i'll fall in love all over again. sometimes it can even be better the second time around. - posted at 1:03AM | link | comments (1) |

mishie's stereo is playing: british sea power - "open season"
the raveonettes are set to release a brand new album perhaps inspired both by john hughes and angus young...pretty in black is out may 3rd. as a follow-up to their chain gang of love lp, the new album features less distortion and more melody but still promises tons of rock and roll intensity. produced by band member sune rose wagner & richard gottehrer, it also includes guest musicians maureen tucker (velvet underground), ronnie spector and martin rev (suicide). the band have a new member anders christensen who is playing bass now that sharin foo has decided to focus on singing. the raveonettes also steal the crown away from my favourite band interpol when it comes to most amusing song title in recent memory. interpol may have had the song "public pervert" on their last album antics, but the raveonettes now have a song on the new album titled "seductress of bums"! wonder what this one sounds like. of course they will be touring in support of the new album, the raveonettes will be in toronto on june 4th @ lee's palace for a show. tickets should be on sale soon so be on the look out. i really wanna go! - posted at 7:53PM | link | comments (1) |

mishie's stereo is playing: the frames - "burn the maps"
radiohead (who are one of the most brilliant bands evarr!) premiered a brand new song at the ether festival @ royal festival hall in london march 27th. it is titled "arpeggi" and was performed by jonny and tom w/ the nazareth orchestra. download it here. (thanks jason!) any thoughts? if you want lyrics, go here. they also performed other tracks: "music for children", "smear" and "where bluebirds fly". this stuff is available for download here, or you can fish around here. hopefully a full bootleg will surface soon. it will still be a while, but i can't wait for the new album! thom yorke is also reportedly working with felix da housecat for his solo album...and jonny is doing more classical stuff for the bbc. if you still care (i'm not sure i do), a new oasis track titled "lyla" has leaked. download it here before it disappears. right now i'm listening to to the frames. their latest album burn the maps is by far my favourite release of 2005 thus far. it is an amazing album...i really can't say it better than these critics: "the frames sing about love and death and revelation...making hearts surge everytime" - nyt - posted at 6:13PM | link | comments (5) |

mishie's stereo is playing: iron and wine - "our endless numbered days"
the bravery also finally release their self-titled debut album and it is one addictive motherfucker! this follows the greatness that was their three song e.p. haters can hate these next big things all they want, but these guys know how to get the peeps on da dance floor. scratchy vocals, awesome bass lines, and enough melody and new wave goodness to take you pass 2005. also pick up: morrissey's live at earl's court album, because i said so. and much to my surprise, stereophonics have a new album out titled language, sex, violence, other? does anyone care anymore? stream the album here. i just did and i think it's mighty unimpressive. today is the very last broadcast of my radio show "the specialist" on CKRG 89.9 fm. it's been fun, but classes are over in a week...i'm graduating, so i won't be back. i have a feeling this won't be the end of my radio career though, and it definitely won't be the end of my DJ career. tune in today from 1-2:30 p.m. i'm also broadcasting a unique special titled radio bonnaroo, brought to you by CKRG and the music festival itself. this program features rare, live performances and musical gems from acts like bright eyes, gillian welch, wilco, jack johnson, r.e.m., joss stone, gomez and much more! it's gonna be great. and also check out my friend diana's art portfolio online. what a talent! she has paintings, comics and much more. designer extraordinaire sean mccabe also has something new in the works, go see! have a nice day. - posted at 11:24AM | link | comments (1) |

mishie's stereo is playing: bright eyes - "i'm wide awake, it's morning"
the bright eyes video for "first day of my life" is one of the best i've seen in recent memory. it's so simple and sweet and totally warms my sappy 'lil heart. the video shows couples sitting together listening to the song with their headphones on. the song itself is a cute acoustic ditty that even elliott smith could have sung. watch it here. on a completely different note, here's the brand new gorillaz video for "feel good inc.": windows / real player sin city is looking really good to me right now. i'll try and check it out this weekend if i can spare the time. i really like the black and white shots, and how it has a total film noir feel to it. plus, the cast! what a treat. how awesome to have benicio del toro (i love him!), clive owen (ditto!), alexis bledel (rory!), josh hartnett (small role, but i think he's cute), elijah wood (ditto) and jessica alba (i think she is absolutely gorgeous) all together! i could do without bruce willis and brittany murphy though. i just applied for 5 (!) summer jobs, including a human resources assistant one that i don't think i'm qualified for (they want 1-2 yrs experience in a human resources environment) but it's for a really good company so hopefully they'll overlook that and see that i'm an intelligent, capable, charming individual. someone will call me back for something, right? i really love the beatles song "i've just seen a face". oh so sweet! i've been playing it on constant repeat today. won't someone serenade me with this? - posted at 5:16PM | link | comments (0) |

much more music aired moulin rouge last night! so best. i used to be so obsessed with the soundtrack so it was great seeing it again. come to think of it, it is one of my favourite movies that i still have yet to own. another favourite i need to buy on dvd is almost famous. i also want to snag the new donnie darko director's cut as well, even if it's just for the spiffy packaging because everyone should know the original cut is actually far superior. you can not, under any circumstances, substitute echo and the bunnymen for inxs damnit! why, richard, why?!?! my 11 year old sister said to me late last night..."hey michelle, i have a friend who actually knows about interpol! she knows that song 'stella was a DRIVER'. i couldn't stop laughing. mike (an equally hip-happening toronto blogger) told me that EYE magazine mentioned me in their recent issue...check it out here. i'm famous! kinda. it would have been ten times cooler if they actually linked me though, especially because that coldplay download link has been removed. if you're nice, i will consider sending you the show if you are still looking for it though. i tried listening to the new fiona apple leak of extraordinary machine a couple nights ago, but fell asleep because i was so tired. i think i got around to half of it. i've had it for freaking ages but i never was in the mood to put it on. i used to adore her music in high school, but i was a much angrier unpleasant person then. i love the title track and think the production is excellent, but the other songs don't really immediately catch me, i'd much rather listen to her older albums (but even those i really don't pull out anymore). fan reception seems great though, everyone seems to love it. maybe my opinion will change in the coming months while those asses at sony decide on the fate of this record. you can download the album here. hurry! - posted at 1:40PM | link | comments (3) |

mishie's stereo is playing: dirty on purpose - "sleep late for a better tomorrow" e.p. i had a quite a scare today when i thought i had lost my pretty bracelet made of white gold that my grandmother gave me. thank god i found it in my bed when i took a nap this evening...so weird, i don't know how it fell off because the clasp is pretty tight. i watched some of my favourite scenes from my garden state dvd again after work today...i absolutely love that movie. there are so many great moments in that film i could point out, but the one part that always stands out and makes me laugh no matter how many times i watch it is when andrew and sam are in her room and she tells him about her brother titembay and how smart and hard working he is. she goes on about how he makes her feel lazy because of all his accomplishments, then she says something like "when he was growing up, he was one of those kids with the flies all over his face". natalie portman's delivery and expression is priceless...so funny. i was browsing through the garden state livejournal community and some people posted pictures of some home-made garden state shirts. i am so jealous because they look so great. check them out here, here and here. if only i could make one myself :( i've been kinda searching for a garden state poster for my room too and i can only seem to find them online. i don't want to order online right now. i borrowed a lot of stuff from the library to read this week during my study breaks:
i finished my film assignment! i finished my shakespeare paper! whew. now i gotta think of a topic for my modern lit. essay...i really like writing papers while listening to dirty on purpose. i've had their sleep late for a better tomorrow e.p. for a long time now and i can never get tired of it. this band is just too frightenly good to be true. i love their music and their pretty harmonies and gorgeous layers of guitar. hopefully they will tour toronto one day so i can see them. - posted at 11:02PM | link | comments (3) |

mishie's stereo is playing: the raveonettes - "a touch of black" e.p.
i just had a very odd combination of food: a bottle of corona beer + an ice cream sandwich. i wish the beer tasted better, but the ice cream sandwich was fantastic. i was on the prowl all over the house this afternoon looking for chocolate. i couldn't find anything for my craving. blasphemy! where are the chocolate eggs? my long weekend will most likely be very uneventful. i have so much school work to do. i hope everyone else has more fun than me. right now i'm trying to finish my film write-up on stanley kubrick. i have a big english paper to write. i have a shakespeare paper to write. i need to study for my critical thinking/logic + poetry exams next week. the studying probably won't get done, but i need to finish some papers. making my next mix cd is turning out to be a harder task than i thought it would be. i am so anal. everything has to be perfect. i want to take more pictures for my flickr page. i really should. i suppose i really ought to start looking for a full-time job right about now. i'll be finished school full-time very soon, and i need only take two more courses in the summer to graduate with my B.A. i need to make some serious cash this summer....yup. anyone have any contacts in the music biz? my little sister is playing this horrible 8 minute dance remix of ashlee simpson's "la la" right now. kill me now. i can't wait until my trip to nyc, even though it is still so far away. i'll be in the big apple from may 20-23rd. looking forward to seeing my friends in the city! maybe we can stalk some cute rock stars? - posted at 9:28PM | link | comments (1) |

mishie's stereo is playing: the church - "starfish"
i asked my cute and fellow interpol fangirl- friend shoma (who needs to make her blog debut SOON!) if she would like to come over today because i thought we could both geek out over my latest music aquisitions. i was worried she would decline and think i was a major dork but fortunately, she agreed that it would be a splendid idea. haha...we had a lot of fun hanging out. i introduced her to this awesome smiths tribute band the sweet and tender hooligans. the lead singer sounds so much like the moz, it's uncanny. i gave her cds from astaire and kinetic - two lovely bands that need to be heard by everyone. she gave me copies of ted leo's tyranny of distance and the decemberists' picaresque plus this absolutely amazing mix cd with songs from: bloc party, colin meloy, doves, rufus wainwright, patrick wolf, antony and the johnsons and so much more. i am very happy right now. i'm also working on a new mix cd. you can have one if you give me one in return. oh, and my favourite band is on the latest issue of SPIN magazine...check it (thanks caitlin!) before you go, stream the new gorillaz single: windows / real player update: 1:12 a.m. - i just finished watching the incredibles on dvd, soooo great! superb animation, so much action. i really loved it more than i thought i would. - posted at 8:45PM | link | comments (8) |

in the evening, i tuned into some retro 80s broadcast...so great! hey, does anyone have an mp3 of xtc's "senses working overtime" to share with me? i realized i really, really love that song. if anyone knows any cool radio stations that play my kind of music, let me know! i can't get enough of those brits! i drink so much tea that i wish i was a celebrity so i could sign some sort of endorsement deal. today i've had no less than five cups (interspersed throughout the day)! tomorrow will be busy, why am i still up?! we're performing shakespeare's measure for measure in the afternoon (but not before a grueling morning practice). in the evening, i'll be seeing pedro almodóvar's la mala educación. let it be known that mishie thinks that gael garcía bernal is pretty damn hot. rawr. - posted at 1:28AM | link | comments (5) |

as much as i'd hate to admit it because i love cds so much, digital music is the wave of the future. i do love the itunes music store dearly though and think it's a really good service. i purchase stuff occasionally and have even given a few giftcards to people recently. everyone's enjoyed them. right now i'm eyeing the new postal service single we will become silhouettes (i can't find a physical copy in stores and i want the b-side "be still my heart") and the new rufus wainwright 6 song live e.p. alright, already recorded in montreal. i wish apple had the pepsi itunes caps promotion to win free songs going on here in canada. that would be cool. i don't drink a lot of pepsi or any soft drinks really, and i doubt this promotion would make me drink more...but it would still be cool. i'm such a dork, but at least i'm not selling my caps on ebay. - posted at 12:53PM | link | comments (5) |

mishie's stereo is playing: kaiser chiefs - "employment"
howie is a great singer/songwriter and his song "collide" is all over the radio at the moment. i'm glad he's getting some exposure. i love his songs and he really should be just as popular as john mayer. he's also gained notierity for his amazing live shows. in other news, i am totally in love with the new kaiser chiefs album employment. so many parts of it remind me of blur and OH MY GOD - they use a cowbell! this is the best thing EVARR. this is an excellent quality recording of the cure's show in toronto last summer. i just stumbled upon it today. - posted at 6:24PM | link | comments (0) |

she is selling a five song e.p. come on home at the shows. come on home (cd cover / insert) in 2002, she released an independent cd preincarnate featuring eight original songs: overpopulated / 1972 / day after today / honestly / josiah / don't walk away / las palmas / mr radioman. apparently, this is near impossible to track down now (?) of course, she also does a duet with tyler hilton on the one tree hill soundtrack. it's a cover of ryan adams' "when the stars go blue" and it's really nice. i like it and i am a huge fan of the original....tyler does some wonderful covers of beatles songs as well that you can frequently hear in concerts. - posted at 4:42PM | link | comments (0) |

mishie's stereo is playing: coldplay - "live @ the troubadour" bootleg
DJing at the embassy last night was a lot of fun - the owners lucy and dave are the sweetest, coolest people. it was such a fun environment and it seemed like a very hip, happening place. the place was packed a lot of the night...and i was even able to make a fellow music fan happy by spinning him "just like honey" by jesus and mary chain and then "love will tear us apart" by joy division. i can not wait to be back again april 15th. here's a song i can not get out of my head: louis xiv - "finding out true love is blind" (video) : real / quicktime / windows media - posted at 8:18PM | link | comments (3) |

mishie's stereo is playing: coldplay - "live @ the troubadour" bootleg
coldplay played a very intimate show to 400 fans @ the troubadour in l.a. on march 11th to preview songs from their upcoming album x&y. sadly i was not there to take in the brilliance in person, but i just got hold of a bootleg that contains new songs. the band did a 60 minute set, and played a lot of old favourites as well. the new material sounds totally awesome and i only wish this was a better quality recording. the song that has made the most impact with me thus far is "what if" (beautiful ballad, in the same vein as "the scientist" and "amsterdam"). i'm gonna be listening to this more tonight to form a solid opinion. the setlist: square one / in my place / white shadows / daylight / sparks / a message / clocks / what if encore: politik / speed of sound / yellow update: the link i posted to download this bootleg has now been taken down. i will consider sending it to you if you send me a nice e-mail and tell me just how great i am... x&y and will be out june 7th in north america. the first single "speed of sound" will be out may 23rd. the song "talk" (that pays homage to kraftwerk's "computer love") that previously leaked is rumoured to be the b-side to "speed of sound". it will not appear on the album. i'm still waiting for news about the final tracklisting of x&y, but rest assured when i know - so will you! - posted at 9:14PM | link | comments (2) |

mishie's stereo is playing: aqualung - "strange and beautiful"
aqualung is the brainchild of matt hales, a classically trained musician from southampton who has been writing music ever since he could remember. the latest album STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL pulls tracks from their first two u.k. releases into a wonderfully coherent album, and serves as a wonderful introduction for north american fans. this is moody, melancholic and beautiful brit pop that recalls equal parts coldplay, radiohead and ed harcourt. the first single "brighter than sunshine" is a glorious bittersweet pop song that echoes sentiments that are pretty universal. i love that many of the songs are piano-based but still lightly brushed with marvellous string arrangements. pick it up and hear it for yourself next tuesday march 22nd, 2005. there is lots of other great stuff coming out on the same day too, i'll fill you in next week... aimee mann's new album the forgotten arm (her fifth solo release) is an interesting concept album that tells the story of a couple named john and caroline who meet and fall in love while road-tripping across america. the album was produced by joe henry and was recorded in only five days during the summer of 2004. right now you can stream three tracks off the album from her official site. there will be a new track every week leading up to the album's release date which is may 3rd. - posted at 10:14PM | link | comments (1) |

mishie's stereo is playing: travis - "twelve memories"
after such a wicked party last night (thanks jorge!), i'm amazed i woke up at a decent hour. anyway, sunday afternoon was spent with a slight headache watching season one of one tree hill on dvd. i finally finished the boxset, and it was great. so many great moments...i love this show way more than the o.c...all teen dramas can all get a bit tiring with the same old plots, but i felt these characters were a whole heck of a lot believable than those orange county goofs. i can't wait to watch the second season except i don't know when/if it airs in canada. does anyone know? i know it's airing on the WB network in the u.s.... i love the music on the show so much. one of the characters, peyton sawyer, is a huge rock music fan and she's always wearing cool indie rock t-shirts and listening to all sorts of great music in her room. her record collection is to die for! she even helped me reconnect with the group travis who used to be one of my favourites (i discovered them at around the same time as coldplay back in high school). in one episode she gives her best friend the cd to help her woo a guy she is interested in, but she totally blows it by thinking travis is one guy, and not a band. pretty funny...another episode featured the heartbreaking song "re-offender" (such a good song). i used to carry around the band's cds all the time (ahh, the days when i had my discman + 10 cds..), but then i gradually lost interest for some reason. by the time they released the twelve memories lp in 2003 i no longer cared too much. it also didn't help that it got some real abysmal reviews. tonight i got a copy of the album through a friend. i'm listening to it now and guess what? i love it. it's a lot darker in terms of lyrical content compared to their previous albums, but it sounds so pretty all the same. fran healy's voice is great, and all the melodies are there waiting to be stuck in your head. the very last song they played during the finale of season one was none other than "run" by snow patrol. i think this song is amazing, and it will probably rank as one of my favourite rock ballads for years to come...sure, it sounds a bit like coldplay's "yellow" but i love it all the same. the album is real good too. i think it's time i pull out my starsailor albums! haha....no, seriously. i'm not being ironic at all, i am in love with all this soft british rock. - posted at 8:38PM | link | comments (3) |

mishie's stereo is playing: idlewild - "warnings/promises"
i was so looking forward to seeing margaret cho @ massey hall having watched all her dvds and listened to her comedy albums throughout the years. this woman is so damn funny and i always find myself laughing so hard that i'm almost crying and/or peeing my pants when i watch her. she is also extremely intelligent and always has a good opinion to share (albeit in her own charming, twisted way). i would vote for her if i was american and she decided to run for president! her show @ massey hall last night was such a hoot! she is officially my new idol. she was so hilarious although i think she overdid the bush bashing a tad bit (we all hate him, we know..), i wanted more stories about her mother (who at this point is almost as famous as she is). the impressions of zhang ziyi + bjork were by far the highlight of the night (although i did enjoy her mantra - "fuck ugly people!...they have to try so much harder because they won't ever get another chance.) she even has a blog that i do not read often enough (only because i am obsessed with reading mainly music blogs), but it is well worth checking out. this saturday, i will be DJing my friend jorge's party clickshutter. my sources tell me this is going to the party of the year, you are all invited of course. details here. - posted at 4:18PM | link | comments (3) |

When I left my father's house My father was a snake-oil man A mile above Niagara Falls Tomorrow I'll invent a trick - Leonard Cohen i had a really wonderful and engaging class today in my poetry and poetics module because we spent a big chunk of time discussing this piece from mr. cohen's collection Flowers For Hitler (1964). i really love this poem, and very much enjoy studying poetry in general. perhaps it will be one of the few things i will miss when i finally graduate this august. if i were to futher pursue my literature studies in the future, i would definitely try and do something related to poetry. as some of you may know, i am also immensely interested in russian playwrights (especially anton chekhov, whom i think is one of the greatest writers that ever lived) and japanese literature. the japanese have written some of the most intelligent, thought-provoking fiction i have had the pleasure of reading in my (relatively) short lifetime. - posted at 12:00AM | link | comments (0) |

mishie's stereo is playing: doves - "some cities"![]() FALLING DOWN INTO SITUATIONS, BRINGING OUT THE BEST IN YOU much fun was had on friday night...tried moussaka for the first time in my life at a greek restaurant on the danforth with some friends before heading off to the opera house to catch the frames show. i caught a bit of the opener mark geary and then secured myself an excellent spot right at the front by the time the frames hit the stage. the show was...powerful, to say the least. i was completely caught off guard, who knew this band could rock so hard? a lot of their songs are so quiet and mellow on the albums, but on-stage it is a totally different story. i completely understand the mogwai comparisons now. it was great, and there was so much love from the crowd. so many people were singing along to every word and it was inspiring to see. my favourite moment of the night was when they played "star star", it is probably is my favourite (older) song from them..i love the lyrics, very delicate and pretty. their very last song after the encore was an acapella of the old classic "devil town". everyone was so hushed and quiet, snapping their fingers. a perfect closing to a wonderful night. star star, teach me how to shine, teach me so i know what's going on in your mind - posted at 7:47PM | link | comments (2) |

i was browsing through the website for addvice marketing today (i had no idea that the folks at vice started a music promotions company) because i got contacted by their offices in toronto, and found some old pictures of carlos d (and some other familiar faces)...i've never seen them before and just thought i'd share because i know there are some carlos fanatics out there. i've been suffering from a bit of check out carlos here and here. p.s. one day we will DJ together! i wonder if he plays his own songs....haha as predicted, i had to shovel a whole crapload of snow from the driveway earlier this afternoon, but at least i did it whilst listening to the new doves album on sebastian the ipod. it definitely made the time much more enjoyable. i finished disc one of the one tree hill box set and am waiting impatiently for the second disc (there are six discs in total for season one) to arrive from vhq online. give me more teen drama! what can i say? the boys are hot, the music they feature ain't bad and i like how each episode is named after a rock song...pretty nifty. - posted at 8:40PM | link | comments (3) |

[i'm totally snowed in today so i won't be heading to campus for class, or to do my radio show....bummer. i hope i don't waste the day sitting on my butt at home. i also hope the snow clears up.] doves' some cities is one of my most anticipated records of 2005, and today it finally hits shoppes! they have been one of my favourite u.k. rock bands for a couple years now, and their albums never disappoint. i'm guessing this will hold me over until that darn coldplay album comes out! i already love the doves' first single, "black and white town"...if you haven't heard it, check out this media player where you can stream four tracks from the new album...then get yer ass to your favourite record store and buy a couple copies for you and your best friend. - posted at 9:10AM | link | comments (2) |
